Former BCCI president and iconic Indian cricket captain, Sourav Ganguly, has unveiled the 15 players who will represent India in the forthcoming ICC Menโs ODI World Cup 2023. Notably, this edition of the prestigious 50-over tournament will be hosted in India for the very first time. The event is set to feature 10 participating teams, engaging in a total of 48 matches across 10 renowned venues in the country.
The selection process gained momentum when the Ajit Agarkar-led committee declared Indiaโs 17-player roster for the upcoming Asia Cup on August 21. This announcement hinted at the probability that the 15-player ODI World Cup squad would be predominantly drawn from this pool of 18 individuals initially shortlisted to participate in the prominent subcontinental competition.
Within the Asia Cup selection, the inclusion of Sanju Samson as a reserve wicketkeeper captured attention. With the impending deadline of September 5 for the finalization of the ODI World Cup squad, Sourav Ganguly, during a broadcast on Star Sports, revealed his chosen 15-member Indian squad for this international tournament.
Evaluating the 17-player roster named for the Asia Cup, Ganguly decided to exclude the emerging talent Tilak Varma and fast bowler Prasidh Krishna from his ODI World Cup squad. Despite being a promising 20-year-old, Tilak Varma is yet to make his One Day International debut for India. The return of Shreyas Iyer further diminished the prospects of Tilak Varma securing a spot in the Asia Cup lineup.
Similarly, Prasidh Krishna, a 27-year-old pacer from Karnataka, has remained absent from ODI matches for over a year. This absence significantly reduced his likelihood of being preferred over the established Shardul Thakur, who has consistently delivered impactful performances. Shardul Thakur holds the distinction of being Indiaโs leading wicket-taker in ODIs since the culmination of the 2019 ODI World Cup. His dual competency in both pace bowling and batting played a crucial role in his selection.
Sourav Gangulyโs finalized squad consists of five proficient batters: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and Suryakumar Yadav. The wicketkeeper-batter roles will be entrusted to KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan. The all-round capabilities will be provided by Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel. The spin department will be spearheaded by Kuldeep Yadav, while the pace attack will be led by Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Shardul Thakur.
Additionally, Ganguly unveiled a contingency plan with three like-for-like replacements. In case of any injury affecting middle-order batters, Tilak Varma will step in. Likewise, if a pacer or spinner sustains an injury, Prasidh Krishna and Yuzvendra Chahal have been identified as suitable replacements, respectively.
As cricket enthusiasts eagerly await the commencement of the ICC Menโs ODI World Cup 2023 on Indian soil, Gangulyโs strategic selection aims to position the Indian team for a strong performance in this much-anticipated cricketing spectacle.
